The young accounting graduate, fresh out of
uni and knowing everything, applied for his first job. The
prospective
employer asked him what starting salary he was looking
for.
"Oh, around $100,000 a year, depending on the benefits
package."
"Well, how does this sound? Five weeks annual leave, 22.5%
superannuation, paid expenses to overseas conferences every year, home
telephone
reimbursed and a company car replaced every 20,000
kilometres, say a
Mercedes convertible."
The graduate sat up straight
and tried not to look excited. "Wow. Are
you
kidding?"
"Yeah. But you started it."
A
man went to apply for a job. After
filling out all of his applications,
he waited anxiously for the
outcome.
The employer read all his applications and said, "We have an
opening
for people like you."
"Oh, great," he said, "What is
it?"
"It's called the door!"
Employer: "In this job we need someone
who is responsible."
Applicant: "I'm the one you want. On my last
job, every time anything
went wrong, they said I was
responsible."
A poet ought not to pick nature's pocket. Let him borrow, and so borrow as to repay by the very act of borrowing. Examine nature accurately, but write from recollection, and trust more to the imagination than the memory. Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Acquaintance, n.: A person whom we know well enough to borrow from, but not well enough to lend to. Ambrose Bierce
I live now on borrowed time, waiting in the anteroom for the summons that will inevitably come. And then - I go on to the next thing, whatever it is. One doesn't luckily have to bother about that. Agatha Christie
